Annual Tree Walks are Great Success

On October 27, 2010, over 35 participated in Trees for Augusta, Inc.’s first Tree Walk.

In October 2012, Roy Simkins, certified arborist and Chairman of the Augusta-Richmond County Tree Commission, led a group of about 30 people on a tour of notable trees at Redcliff Plantation in Beech Island , SC. Besides the allee of magnoilas along the original entrance drive, the colorful Chinese pistache was one of the most popular trees on the tour.

Previously, Simkins has led Trees for Augusta tours of the Augusta Country Club and a small portion of the Summerville neighborhood. The tour started at the corner of Milledge Road. and Walton Way and circled the Milledge Road, Cumming Road, and Johns Road block.

Roy pointed out trees, both native and exotic. Many were planted in the late 19th century and obtained from the nearby Fruitlands Nursery – now the Augusta National Golf Club.

The group gathered at Woodlawn Methodist to start the walk through Summerville
Photos and some video, taken by Dan Doughtie and underwritten by a grant from the Association of Community Trees and the Home Depot Foundation, of the tour are posted on this website.

After an hour long walk, the Tree Walk ended with a front porch reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Caye at 936 Johns Road. Many thanks to Roy Simkins, tour leader, Michell Thurmond, event organizer, and Peter Caye, reception host for helping to make this event a success.

Due to the popularity of this event, additional Tree Tours are planned.
